Issues

Adolescents and young people face many barriers that affect their health, well-being, and opportunities to thrive. Limited access to reliable information, harmful social norms, and gaps in youth-friendly services often prevent young people from making informed decisions about their health and futures.

Youth Plus Policy Network Uganda works with communities, partners, and young people themselves to address these challenges and strengthen systems that support healthier and more informed communities.

Limited Access to Youth-Friendly Health Information

Many adolescents and young people lack access to reliable and accurate information about health, relationships, and well-being. In many communities, discussions around sexual and reproductive health remain sensitive or stigmatized, leaving young people without trusted sources of guidance.

Youthplus works to bridge this gap by creating safe spaces and community-based platforms where young people can access information and ask questions without fear or judgment.

Barriers to HIV Prevention and Testing

Despite progress in HIV prevention, many young people still face barriers to accessing testing services and prevention tools. Distance to services, stigma, and limited awareness of available options often prevent adolescents from seeking support.

Through community information kiosks, peer support systems, and digital platforms, Youthplus works to bring prevention information and services closer to young people.

Harmful Gender Norms and Masculinity

Social expectations and gender norms can influence how young people understand relationships, health, and responsibility. Harmful forms of masculinity, in particular, can discourage men and boys from seeking health services or discussing sexual health openly.

Youthplus engages young men, community leaders, and young women in dialogue that promotes positive masculinity, shared responsibility, and healthier relationships.

Limited Opportunities for Youth Participation

Young people are often excluded from decision-making processes that affect their lives and communities. When youth voices are not included, policies and programs may fail to reflect their real needs and experiences.

Youthplus works to strengthen youth leadership and create platforms where young people can participate in shaping solutions within their communities.

Weak Community Systems for Youth Support

Many communities lack structured systems that connect young people with reliable information, support networks, and services. Strengthening these systems is essential for sustainable change.

The DEEPROOTS model was developed to address this gap by creating a hybrid community and digital system that connects adolescents and young people with trusted information, peer support, and youth-friendly services.

By addressing these interconnected challenges, Youthplus works to create communities where adolescents and young people are informed, supported, and empowered to make healthy decisions about their lives and futures.
