We use our DEEPROOTS approach/ model to achieve our goals.
DEEPROOTS stands for Deepening Engagement, Empowerment, and Participation of Grassroots Communities in Social Transformation.
DEEPROOTS represents the foundation of sustainable change and resilience in communities. Like tree roots firmly grounded, deep-rooted approaches to community transformation address the fundamental issues causing inequality and exclusion.
DEEPROOTS tackles socioeconomic disparities, cultural norms, gender inequality, and access to services, addressing the underlying causes of vulnerability. By nurturing these deep roots through education, empowerment, and community engagement, we can promote progress
We’re currently using DEEPROOTS to reach out to communities especially Adolescent Girls and Young Women (AGYW) facing challenges like gender based violence (GBV), homelessness, unemployment, lack of education, or teenage motherhood about combination HIV prevention and sexual health in communities where we work.
UNAIDS defines combination HIV prevention as rights-, evidence-, and community-based programs that promote a combination of biomedical, behavioral, and structural interventions designed to meet the HIV prevention needs of specific people and communities. Its goal is to reduce the number of new infections through activities with a greater sustained impact.
Our aim is to help communities develop healthy behaviors and self-awareness in preventing HIV and navigating life. DEEPROOTS taps into your inner strength, supported by their communities, to promote HIV prevention. It brings HIV-related information and services closer to the communities for lasting positive impacts. The local social and sexual network engage in conversations about HIV prevention and life choices, empowering them to respond effectively.
DEEPROOTS focuses on self-care, self-esteem, positive thinking, and setting boundaries, as well as educating AGYW on sexual health and gender relations.
DEEP-ROOTS helps people in our communities to access HIV, STI and GBV prevention programs and services. DEEP-ROOTS connects them to prevention and care services including counseling, PrEP, shelter, education, health and other support services.
DEEPROOTS components explained;
Community Kiosks
We’ve set up a network of Community Vital Information kiosks in communities that are deemed vulnerable to HIV/AIDS in partnership with service providers. These kiosks have helplines where community members can get support, advice, and information about HIV, GBV and STI prevention and care services both in person and online. The DEEPROOTS kiosks follow a successful kiosks and agents model which has been used by banks, telecom, and Fintech companies in Africa to bring banking and inclusive financial services to under-served communities through community-based agents operating in kiosks and stalls.
Peer Community Advisors Network
DEEP-ROOTS has created a Peer Community Advisors (PCAs) network who are trained to provide caring and non-judgemental information on HIV/AIDS, sexual health and Gender Based Violence (GBV). They are supportive allies for community members, especially those at risk of GBV or HIV/AIDS. PCAs raise awareness, educate, and promote prevention options.
DEEPROOTS Community Circles
DEEP-ROOTS Community Circles focus on empowering communities by supporting them in their journey towards HIV prevention and improving their life prospects. Through DEEP-ROOTS Community circles, participants engage in group sessions facilitated by the PCAs in their communities. These sessions cover topics such as life choices, mental health wellness, HIV, and sexual health. AGYW in these circles utilize girl-only spaces and collective advocacy campaigns led by community memebers to drive positive change in their lives
DEEP-ROOTS Lifeline
DEEP-ROOTS is a pioneering digital platform and phone helpline led by enthusiastic young leaders. It’s more than just a resource; it’s a lifeline for those seeking confidential information, support, and connections to services and care in the fight against HIV.
Advocacy
In the DEEP-ROOTS model, we collaborate with communities to organize and shift power dynamics. We advocate for increased resources, better policies, and improved programs at local, national, and global levels.
Service Providers Network
In the DEEP-ROOTS program, we’ve established a strong network of service providers to ensure communities easily access the care they need. We recognize that every community has its own support system, linking them to essential services in combination HIV prevention. Our network spans service providers including health, education, legal, social and related services
With our provider network, we’re fostering a movement that fights against stigma and discrimination, promoting diversity, inclusion, and community power for lasting change. Our mission is to change lives through connections, one step at a time. Together, we’re creating a future where everyone can flourish
