Peer Community Advisors (PCAs)
Youth Leaders Supporting Health, Safety, and Community Well-Being
The DEEPROOTS program has established a network of Peer Community Advisors (PCAs) who are trained to provide caring, accurate, and non-judgmental information on HIV prevention, sexual health, and Gender-Based Violence (GBV).
PCAs are trusted allies within their communities. They help young people and community members access information, prevention tools, and support services while promoting healthier and safer environments for everyone.
By creating safe spaces for discussion and learning, PCAs help communities better understand the connections between HIV, sexual health, and gender-based violence.
What Peer Community Advisors Do
Peer Community Advisors play an active role in strengthening community awareness and supporting prevention efforts.
Their work includes:
• providing accurate information on HIV prevention and sexual health
• raising awareness about Gender-Based Violence and its impact on health
• organizing community discussions, workshops, and outreach sessions
• promoting prevention tools such as HIV testing and condom use
• referring individuals to health services and support organizations
• encouraging open dialogue to challenge myths and stigma
Through these activities, PCAs help communities better understand how GBV and HIV risk are connected and how prevention and support services can improve community well-being.
Promoting Gender Equality and Respect
PCAs also play an important role in promoting gender equality and respectful relationships within communities.
They challenge harmful social norms that contribute to gender-based violence and HIV transmission. Through dialogue and education, PCAs encourage values such as consent, respect, and shared responsibility.
By supporting women, girls, and marginalized groups, PCAs help build communities where everyone is treated fairly and where health and safety are protected.
Connecting Communities to Services
Peer Community Advisors help ensure that community members are able to access essential health and support services.
They provide information about:
• HIV testing and prevention services
• counseling and support programs
• sexual and reproductive health services
• GBV response and referral services
PCAs often help guide individuals toward appropriate services and may accompany community members to health facilities when support is needed. Their role helps reduce stigma and encourages people to seek care with confidence.
Role Models in the Community
PCAs serve as role models and positive voices within their communities. Many share their personal experiences and stories to inspire others to speak openly about health, relationships, and prevention.
Through their leadership, PCAs encourage community members to:
• speak out against Gender-Based Violence
• prioritize their sexual health and well-being
• access prevention services and testing
• support others who may need help
Their example helps create communities that are safer, healthier, and more supportive.
A Growing Network of Youth Leaders
The DEEPROOTS PCA network continues to grow as more young people are trained to support community health and prevention efforts.
Today, the program includes more than 60 trained Peer Community Advisors working across multiple communities. This network allows Youthplus to reach thousands of adolescents and young people with trusted information and peer support.
