Our Approach

Communities are not passive recipients of development. They are partners, leaders and agents of lasting change.

Youthplus uses a rights-based, community-led, evidence-informed and partnership-driven approach to strengthen the systems that shape people’s health, education, wellbeing and opportunities.

We begin by listening to communities and understanding the realities behind the challenges they face. We work with women, young people, children, community leaders and local institutions to identify priorities, develop practical responses and strengthen local capacity. Our role is to connect people, services, knowledge and institutions while supporting communities to influence decisions that affect their lives.

We recognise that health, education, gender equality, livelihoods, climate vulnerability and social exclusion are interconnected. Our programmes therefore seek to build connections across sectors rather than treating each challenge in isolation.

The principles that guide our work

Rights-based

We promote human rights, dignity, equality and the ability of people to claim their entitlements and participate in decisions that affect them.

Community-led

We work alongside communities to identify priorities, co-create solutions, strengthen local leadership and build ownership of change.

Evidence-informed

We use research, monitoring, community feedback and learning to understand what works, improve programme quality and inform decisions.

Partnership-driven

We collaborate with public institutions, civil society, academic institutions, development partners and community structures to strengthen collective action.

Inclusive and gender-responsive

We work to reduce barriers to participation and opportunity, with attention to the rights, leadership and lived experiences of women, girls and marginalised groups.

Accountable and adaptive

We value transparency, safeguarding, responsible resource use and continuous improvement informed by community voices and programme evidence.

How our approach works in practice

01

Listen and understand

We engage communities, listen to their experiences and analyse the social, institutional and practical factors shaping local challenges.

02

Connect people and services

We help connect communities with relevant information, public services, learning opportunities, referral pathways and partners.

03

Strengthen local leadership

We support young people, women, community groups and local structures to organise, participate, advocate and lead practical action.

04

Learn and improve

We use evidence, reflection and feedback to adapt our work, strengthen accountability and share learning with partners and decision-makers.

Strengthening systems, not isolated projects

Our work focuses on the relationships between people, community structures, service providers and public institutions. Through initiatives such as DEEPROOTS and the LIFT Education Programme, we develop practical approaches that connect communities to information, services, learning and opportunities. We seek to strengthen local capacity and partnerships so that progress can be sustained beyond individual activities or funding cycles.

Working together for lasting change

We believe lasting change is created when people have the power, opportunity and support to lead it themselves. We welcome collaboration with communities, government institutions, civil society organisations, academic institutions and development partners who share a commitment to inclusive, accountable and community-led development.
